Moving into your new home can be the best and most stressful time in your life. Making sure that you have a boiler that is both efficient and modern is a vital part of moving into a new home. Reading through this guide will give you advice on what to look for in a new boiler and which one is best for your home.

Will I need a new boiler?

There are a few reasons that you may need a new boiler in your new home such as if your homes current boiler is older than ten years, if your new boiler keeps breaking down and if your new boiler is failing to heat your new home. These are the three main ways that you can spot that you need to replace your current boiler with a brand new one.

What are the different types of boilers?

There are three main boiler types that are combi boilers, system boilers and conventional boilers. Each of these different types of boilers have their own pros and cons and are suitable for different styles of houses.

Combi boiler

A combi boiler is the most common type of boiler. This is due to not needing much space for the boiler and that you can get hot water straight away. As well as taking up less space combi boilers are very efficient, this is due to not need to store hot water in a tank before it is needed. Before purchasing one, you can check out this Ideal Logic 30 review to find out if this boiler is perfect for your new home.

However, if you have a bigger home with two or more showers, a combi boiler will not be for you. This is because the water pressure will drastically drop for the second shower, meaning that the flow rate in the second shower will reduce a lot meaning that it will not run very well. No hot water storage tank also means that if your boiler breaks down there will be no hot water until it is fixed.

System boiler

Compared to a combi boiler, with a system boiler you can provide hot water to several taps at once, meaning if you have a home with more than one bathroom a system boiler could be for you. While they take up more space than a combi boiler, they do not require a cold-water tank, meaning you save more space than you would with a conventional boiler.

Compared to a combi boiler, you can only heat up water in advance. This also means that the hot water supply can run out. This is due to the hot water tank only being able to hold so much water. If you have a smaller home this may be a problem also as a system boiler takes up more space than a combi boiler due to the need for a hot water tank. They also are not as efficient as combi boilers. This is due to the hot water being stored in a tank which results in heat loss. Meaning that you will be heating up the water more than you would with a combi boiler, resulting in more energy getting used.

Conventional boiler

The best feature of a conventional boiler is that you can install an immersion heater if your boiler breaks down. This means that you can still generate hot water until your boiler is fixed. If you have moved into an older property, then a conventional boiler will be best. This is due to conventional boilers being the most compatible with older heating systems, as there is little change needed to your home’s pipework. Just like with a system boiler, a conventional boiler is overall great for a large home with more than one bathroom.

The main drawback to a conventional boiler is the amount of space that they take up. This is due to a conventional boiler needing both a hot and cold-water tank. Unlike with a combi boiler, you cannot get water on demand due to the water being stored in a hot water tank. Just like with the system boiler, if you run out of hot water in your tank it can take a while to refill hot water.

What are the different boiler brands?

Just like cars, there are all different boiler brands. Which boiler brand you settle on can often be down to your budget, the warranty offered and even boiler availability. However, there are some boiler brands that you can look out for that are the most popular brands around. These brands are Worcester Bosch, Ideal Boilers, Vaillant Boilers and Viessmann Boilers.

How to install your new boiler

When it comes to installing your new boiler, you will need to hire an engineer that is on the gas safe register. This is due to many boiler manufacturers stating in the warranty that if you conduct the installation or repairs yourself you will void the boiler’s warranty.

Following through this guide you should have some answers for the questions about getting a new boiler and if you even need a new boiler in your new home!
