3 min read

It is a basic human right to protect oneself from any physical harm. The ability to protect yourself should be available to everyone, right from a very young age. We are all so caught up in schooling, colleges and education, we usually forget the importance of self defence and the number of ways it can save us in various situations as well as ensure safety and boost moral confidence.

Self defence is not only a physical activity but also a mental process all along. This activity teaches one various principles such as discipline, dedication, perseverance, maintaining relationships with the next person, hard work, patience. These are everyday values needed for one’s growth to be a better version of themselves.

Especially during childhood, our brain is capable of learning, nurturing and growing profoundly with respect to adulthood. As people say, muscle memory is one of the strongest armor in one’s life; you may forget events, details, people but your brain is wired in a way to remember everything subconsciously which in turn retains and acts based upon muscle memories in similar situations.

Exercising is necessary to stay fit. It is a bonus point if the exercise or the physical activity provides you with all the additional benefits than just simply running to lose weight. There are multiple benefits-

  • Self defence empowers oneself with knowledge, discipline, responsibility. Learning to be responsible for your own actions
  • Martial arts needs a lot of practice. Faster reflex actions are learned in order to fight or win a competition. Repetition allows one to notice and observe things faster
  • Agility and mobility are learnt through practice. One can move faster and work more efficiently especially when it requires a lot of footwork.
  • A punch or a kick is only effective if it is exercised with power and strength. Martial arts help you train your body to become stronger. A lot of strength is required to learn and use the techniques. The kicks and the punches one makes during training improves body’s muscles.
  • Many of us think being disciplined means having a hard body and not being flexible. On the contrary, being disciplined routine teaches one to be flexible when required.
  • Helps improve metabolism as the practice tones your muscles and contributes to weight loss. Higher muscle mass will contribute to metabolism meaning the body will burn calories even while your body is at rest.
  • Cardiovascular diseases are reduced to an extent with exercise and a good diet. Martial arts require a favourable amount of exercise and increases the heart rate helping the heart to learn endurance.
  • Multiple studies and research has shown, exercise helps in improving mental health by reducing daily stress, and improves focus on work. An active body release chemicals like endorphins, reduces probability of premature death, and helps to boost your immunity with the diet.

Amidst all the work, education, daily stress, one requires to distract the mind in order to feel relaxed. Martial arts is a fun activity and offers challenging rounds which helps in all round development of the child.
