Dasung Not eReader: an innovative haunted but expensive e-reader

The Dasung company, already known for having marketed an E Ink computer screen, returns with a device that is halfway between the e-reader and the monitor: the “not ereader”.

Yet in appearance, this new kind of device resembles an e-reader. There is an electronic ink screen (Carta HD type and supplied by the company E Ink) with a nice 7.8 inch diagonal. We also have a quad-core processor, 2 GB of RAM memory and a nice 64 GB of space to store a lot of ebooks and other documents (more on that).

Wifi And 3.5 mm Jack

There is also a WiFi connection, a Bluetooth connection and a stereo audio system (with a 3.5mm jack port to plug in headphones).

However, at Dasung we refuse to qualify this machine as an e-reader. The reason may be that there is an HDMI port. This is used to connect this “Not-eReader” to a computer to act as a monitor and display computer information.

Stranger still, this machine also has an Android system that allows you to display smartphone applications on the screen. In theory, you can then send SMS or make calls from the “e-reader”.

Reading Capabilities

Regarding the reading capabilities of Dasung’s machine, we have a reading application that supports EPUB, MOBI and PDF ebook formats. It might not be the most advanced application, but its presence in combination with the electronic ink screen is enough – in my opinion – to qualify this machine as a digital reading device.

So far, this machine has been available in very few copies due to an IndieGOGO crowdfunding campaign. Dasung had chosen to give priority to delivering to buyers and it was proving very difficult to find this e-reader for sale.

Dasung announced this summer that mass marketing will begin in October. Production should therefore be launched in August 2020.

This e-reader is marketed at a price of $ 389 and seems for the moment mainly reserved for the Asian market even if it is obvious that it will be found on sites like Amazon (in the United States at least).

Is this a new type of device or is it an attempt to renew the e-reader market?

It’s still hard to say. The price seems justified by the characteristics of the machine (Android, possibility of using it as a screen, large battery), but if one wishes to use it as a reading machine, it seems that the InkPad 3 (having a screen of 7.8 inch) will be more suitable and cheaper.
