MRI machines use powerful magnets to take detailed images of organs and tissues in the body. MRI is imaging that helps diagnose a variety of medical conditions.

Doctors can do much imaging, including MRI, X-ray, CT scan, PET scan, and ultrasound. Various shots are required to make multiple diagnoses. The advantage of MRI over other imaging techniques is that they can take detailed images of soft tissues and joints.

MRI scans do not use x-rays or radiation, so they are generally very safe.

MRI generally provides more precise images than CT scans, but MRI requires a longer time and is more inconvenient.

Because powerful magnets are used, you cannot get an MRI if your body has certain types of metallic substances.

In most MRI machines, a person enters a narrow tunnel, so some people are extremely anxious (obstructive phobia) and cannot be tested.

Some MRI devices have a relatively large tunnel hole (“open MRI“) so people don’t struggle with it.

Why is the MRI needed?

Doctors may use an MRI instead of a CT scan when more details are needed to determine :

Brain, spinal cord, muscle, and liver problems

Problems with the female reproductive system

Hip bone and pelvic fracture

Joint problems, such as tears or sprains

Bleeding or infection

Doctors may choose an MRI instead of a CT scan if:

You have had an allergic reaction to the type of contrast agent used for the CT scan (such as sneezing, rash, or breathing problems)

Pregnant (because CT scans emit radiation and MRI does not)

What Happens During an MRI Scan?

Before inspection

Empty the contents of the pouch, remove jewelry, belts, and all other metal objects.
