Pharmacology is the science of discovery, production and testing of drugs. The field combines knowledge of medicinal sciences and chemistry to synthesize drugs targeting a specific ailment effectively. The complex nature of the area requires knowledge of not only drugs but also the mechanism of action, side effects and toxicity.

The scope of pharmacy stretches much beyond the synthesis and production of drugs but also includes other roles such as compounding and dispensing of medications, healthcare services and conducting clinical tests. Anyone interested in pursuing pharmacological sciences must obtain a degree in Bachelor of Pharmacy, also known as B pharma. The course is a pre-requisite for obtaining a license to practice as a pharmacist and can also act as a pathway to earning a degree in Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Master of Pharmacy (MPharm). A B pharma program lasts for four years with both annual and semester schemes available and includes subjects such as

To be eligible to apply for a B pharma program, students must take up the following subjects in their 10+2 examination and with an aggregate score of at least 50%

While entrance to most B pharma college is a reasonably direct process, a few colleges require students to give a mandatory entrance examination. The entrance examination can be a state standard entrance test such as GPAT – Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test, Goa Common Entrance Test, Maharashtra Common Entrance Test or be the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). An alternate pathway to enter a B pharma college is to obtain a D. Pharm (Diploma of Pharmacy) and gain direct admission to the second year of a traditional B Pharma program.
